A message to all email list owners out there.
Don’t waste my f*cking time with your fake subject lines.
Stop trying to trick me into opening your email.
Nothing infuriates me more than thinking the email is something serious, then realizing it’s a trick.
I just did a double-take on this subject line:
“Re: Please cancel my retainer”
First, I see the “RE” which is typically an important response from someone I am in communication with.
But they add this in there to trick you.
Then, it says a potentially triggering phrase that feels as if it’s coming from a client.
I don’t have any clients with retainers, so I wasn’t that triggered, but I did think this was real.
So I opened it.
The first line says…
“Imagine getting this email first thing in the morning…“
Ughhhhhhhh…
So cringy.
This is pain point marketing.
Just stop!
Manipulation is unethical.
Tricking people into your marketing is uncool, unsustainable, and lazy.
Instead, simply tell me what’s in the email.
You can still get creative and have fun with it.
You can still make it interesting and exciting.
Just hold the trickery.
Guess what else is in the email…
“Until I discovered this one funnel.”
and..
“I set it up in one evening. The next day my calendar was full.“
