Alright, time to flip something on its head and set you free.
I’ve always loved Simon Sinek’s, “Start with Why”.
I think it revolutionized our thinking around marketing and creating a business mission and direction.
Start with why…not what, or how.
People don’t buy what you do, they buy why you do it.
MLK – “I have a dream,” not “I have a plan.”
It’s genius and it worked.
So then it got us all thinking, “what’s my why?”
If I can just figure out my “why”, then everything will finally fall into place.
But this is problematic for people like us. It’s too big a question for too broad a landscape.
It may be helpful for a large corporation struggling with their marketing message or team morale, but what about us?
The solo brand builder just tryna gain some traction, make some sales, and build a sustainable business.
For someone who tends to overthink, get distracted and overwhelmed, and have occasional mid-brand crises, this leads us down a stressful path.
Instead, I stumbled across something different.
Something for us.
And get excited, because when I read this, I nearly floated away.
So hold onto something.
When answering the question, “What’s your why?”
Sun Yi says:
I don’t have one. I wasted 10 years of my life looking for my why and just ended up confused and miserable.
Once I stopped looking for my why, I became happier and realized everything good in my life happened by accident.
Here’s my life philosophy: I do whatever task is in front of me with 100% focus, care and love. I don’t worry about tomorrow. The universe will show me the next steps.
This is it. You’re welcome.
I too have wasted so much time worrying about the perfect path, plan, strategy, bio, title, about copy, elevator pitch, vision, mission, why etc.
Each one of those things is important in the right context, but at the end of the day, you’re better off just whatever task is in front of you with 100% focus, care and love without worrying about tomorrow. You’ll be happier and healthier than ever.
So here is your permission to let go of “finding your why,” and just get to work on what’s in front of you.
I’ll be doing this in the Box, feel free to join me.
