Can I do this? If so, how?

Self-talk.

I talk to myself.

You talk to yourself.

Everybody talks to themselves.

It’s okay.

But what are you saying, and how effective is it really?

In another Thinkful Thurday, I added that, on average, 70% of self-talk is negative.

But what about the positive self-talk?

WHAT POSITIVE SELF TALK MAY SOUND LIKE

You can do it.
You got this.
You’re the best.
You are enough.
You’re going to do great.

And so on.

These are fine, but you can do much better.

The science shows us that asking ourselves a question can be a far more effective approach to self-talk.

So ask yourself, can I do this? If so how?

WHAT TYPICALLY HAPPENS NEXT

You have to answer the question.

This starts to turn the gears in a way “I got this” can’t do.

This approach calls you to real-world preparation, rehearsing, strategizing, and exploring new perspectives and past experiences.

So, the next time you come across a problem, a challenge, or a goal, ask yourself…

Can I do this? If so, how?
