Be useful…

I’m watching the series “Arnold” on netflix.

It’s about Arnold Schwarzenegger’s life.

I’m really enjoying it.

He grew up in the tiny village of Thal, just outside of Graz, Austria.

How did he go from this tiny town to becoming…well, Arnold.

I recommend watching the series, but it’s kind of all boiled down to him having a blueprint, visualizing his future, and then working hard and taking every opportunity he saw – fueled by his deep desire to change his environment.

That last part is really important.

There was a man named Reg Park who basically did exactly what Arnold ended up doing. It was the perfect blueprint for Arnold to follow.

He built the body, won Mr. Universe, got the movie role, and became a star.

Arnold saw his path. Now it was only a matter of time.

  1. Build the perfect body
  2. Win the competitions
  3. Get the movie role
  4. Become a star

That’s it.

Pretty simple.

The rest was him working out, focusing, visualizing and grabbing opportunities. If it didn’t help him achieve one of those 4 things, he likely wasn’t doing it.

One line in the episode jumped out at me and I can’t stop thinking about it.

It’s something his father often said to him and his brother.

It’s so simple yet profound.

“Always be useful.”

It may sound silly, but let’s unpack it a bit.

No one really tells you to be useful. It sounds harsh. Like you need to be useful to matter.

But on some level, that’s true.

Being born doesn’t grant you life. You must earn, build, and create your life.

Left on default mode, your life will be pretty miserable.

But if you focus on being useful, a lot of things fall into place.

If you’re useful, people will pay you.

If you’re useful, people will respect you.

If you’re useful, you’ll have purpose outside of yourself – bringing you fulfillment and deeper connections.

If you’re useful, you’ll always have a direction – you’ll keep moving forward.

You’ll be able to support those around you.

Being useful will keep you from wandering.

If you’re not useful, you’re off track…figure out how to be useful.

Depressed? Figure out how to be useful.

Broke? Be useful.

Lost? Be useful.

If this resonates with you, I suggest pulling up a doc right now and journaling.

How are you useful today?

How can you be useful moving forward?

What skills can you learn to be more useful.

How would that feel?

That’s it.
